Qatar is a small country located in the Middle East, on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south, and the Persian Gulf to the north, east and west. Qatar is an absolute monarchy with a population of around 2.7 million people, the majority of whom are expatriates. The country has the highest GDP per capita in the world, thanks to its large reserves of oil and natural gas. Qatar is also known for hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and also for its futuristic architecture and ambitious infrastructure projects.

History

Qatar has a rich history that dates back to the Neolithic period. The area was ruled by various Arab tribes and empires throughout history, including the Al Khalifa, the Al Thani, and the Ottoman Empire. In the late 19th century, Qatar became a British protectorate and later gained independence in 1971.

During the 20th century, Qatar rapidly developed its economy through the extraction and export of oil and natural gas. This led to a significant increase in the country's wealth and standard of living. Qatar also played an important role in regional politics, particularly during the Gulf War in the 1990s.

In recent years, Qatar has undergone significant political and economic changes. The country has become a major player in the global economy, hosting major international events such as the World Cup and investing in infrastructure projects. Qatar has also been at the center of regional tensions, particularly with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Qatar has been governed as an absolute monarchy since its independence in 1971, with the Al Thani family holding the majority of political power. However, in recent years, Qatar has also been implementing some democratic reforms, including the establishment of an elected legislative council.
